Eames Lounge Reupholstery Project

I started sanding this weekend, and I need more sandpaper already!! I thought it would go a lot faster honestly - but you learn as you go. I'm not going to try to get down to bare wood, as the walnut satin is much darker than the old stain, and I think it will cover fine.

My "mouse" sander is working okay, I think a more professional orbital sander would cut my time down, but my equipment budget is going towards an electric staple gun.

(I also need to get a mask, cough, cough)

  1. This is a great project--love the classic Eames chair.

Before you buy an electric staple gun, check out non-electric heavy duty staplers. I'm sure there are great electric ones out there, but I bought one thinking it would make upholstering so much easier, and it turned out that it's not as good as my good non-electric. So try some out if you can.

  2. Hi Kathi - thanks for the tip! I'm mostly worried about hand fatigue. I've heard the electric sometimes don't drive the staple in deep enough, was that the trouble you had?

  3. Yes, the electric one I bought wasn't powerful enough, and it also seemed to malfunction a lot more often. My favorite stapler right now (I think I have a stapler "problem") is the one that works like a hammer. I don't know if it would do a good job on upholstery, but it takes care of the hand fatigue problem, and it is powerful.
