Inspiration or Stealing?

I ran across the site You thought we wouldn't notice a week or two ago, and was appropriately horrified! The site is an open blog where folks can post examples of creative work reproduced (stolen) without permission. I know this gets into the whole "inspired by" argument, but let's face it - we all know the difference between using someone's idea as a jumping off point vs. outright copying. I have no problem with someone seeing a designer piece that they can't afford and making some kind of DIY version - FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL USE. It's when retailers start doing it that I get pretty pissed.

I noticed this last night (while trying to find a straw summer hat that will fit my giant stupid head) and you tell me - an Urban Outfitters rip-off of a Marimekko print by one of my favorite artists Sanna Annukka or just a creative coincidence?

This one also looks oddly like Sanna's work, no?

Slapdash & Incidental

It's been a busy week, and I don't have much to show for it, but here's some random bits!

I'm currently loving Janelle Monae's album ArchAndroid, but what I can't get out of my head is this amazing photo of her by Skylar Reeves - I mean it's like the powerpoint show in my brain got stuck on the same slide. I don't know why, but I'm fascinated.

A nice review of the craft book I'm in over at Fat Quarterly:

I DO NOT need a $48 beach towel, but damn, if it goes on sale, it's MINE! Cynthia Rowley for Roxy.

New amazing Artist to follow - Richard Colman

Check out pics of Etsy Headquarters over at Hangar Design Group - pretty snazzy (look under commercial)

Before & After: Custom Flor Carpet

I love Flor, I've blogged about it before, and it's great. However, after 2 years, my Fedora in the living room was looking a little worse for ware. Having 2 cats seems to shorten the lifespan of carpet tiles, but I hoped that they would last a bit longer than 2 years. I'm going to use the red and green tiles from my bedroom in the attic storage space, so they last yet.

I didn't want to just get a new color, and since I don't really care for the patterns Flor offers in my price range (though I love the Girard collection,) I decided to create a custom rug!

(I laid out the design in InDesign, then simply cut six tiles on the diagonal with a knife and large metal ruler)

I'm totally jumping on the triangle bandwagon with my design, but it came out so freaking awesome! It brightens up the space and adds more color! (and is very close to white, whiter than I expected, so I have huge fears about maintaining it's cleanliness, but we'll just have to play it out)

Before & After: $2 Footstool

Before - ugly fabric, finish in rough shape, but super sturdy footstool!

After - Pretty Plaid!

I really didn't need another little stool in the apartment, but for $2, I couldn't resist! A little sanding, staining, and new fabric and matching button, and WHA-LAH, our new country cute footstool. Gotta love giant yard sales.

Slacking

Oh Blog! I have nothing to offer right now! I have some half finished projects in the works, but life has been getting in the way. We did manage to get the container garden going this weekend, and I started the stool makeover, but then the car went on the fritz, and my bicycle need to be rode, and drinks needed to be drank with friends...

... so I only did a few things on the weekend to-do list. Promise to get back on the horse soon!

Some recent random things:

I want to make a purse like this tool bag! Ten Compartments!

I made this recipe Quinoa Tabbouleh - super summery and yummy!(add cucumber!)

I also cannot say enough about the St. Germain Cocktail - my new summer favorite:

2 oz Prosecco
1.5 oz St-Germain
2 oz Sparkling Water

Fill a tall Collins glass with ice. Add Prosecco first, then St-Germain, then Sparkling Water. Stir completely. Garnish with a lemon twist, making sure to squeeze!
